Sibling Stress: You Can Be a Good Big Sister
Who says being a big sister is such a breeze? It is not, especially if you are surrounded with little brats. And if you do not do something about stress, it is so easy to be angry, irritated, and simply mean.
Do not allow stress to get into you and worse destroy your relationship with the younger ones. Discover the best stress management tips:
Accept your differences. You will definitely feel a lot of stress relief if you are going to accept the fact that your siblings will never be like you, even if you share the same genes. Their personalities will be completely different from yours, and it is a wrong thing to impose certain characteristics you like to them. As long as they are not doing anything wrong, then let them be.
Be your own person. Sure, you do belong to the same family, but you are still an individual. It is always recommended to be your own person. Go after your interests, no matter how different they are from the rest. Have your own circle of friends.
Do not try to be a parent. As the older one, much will be expected from you. If your parents are not around, you will be in charge. But do not take the responsibility to the extreme. You can never replace your parents, so give most of the disciplining tasks to them.
Stay in touch with them. Are you worried about how your siblings are doing? Then why don’t you stay in touch? There is a variety of communication options to choose, from mobile phones to Skype and instant messengers. Call as often as you can and encourage them to do the same thing.
Have your stress toys ready. This scenario is very common: you are busy doing something, and then your brother barges in and dominates the entire room. His presence makes you so ready to explode and say expletives. But before you do that, learn to control yourself. Stress toys like a stress ball will come in handy.
Be a good example. Your siblings will be looking up to you and will likely imitate everything you are going to do. So set a good example. Be polite, courteous, and respectful to your parents. Do well in school. Shower praises to your siblings.
As much as possible, avoid fights. If you can settle disagreements and differences by talking, then do so. Fights will only make you feel so angry and irrational. It is so easy for you to say or do something you will regret later on.
Practice visualization. It is not impossible to be worried that you are not good enough to be an older sister. But that is not a good thought either. To ease worries and change your thoughts to something more positive, use subliminal messages and visualization.
Good examples of subliminal messages you can use include the following:
I am a good sister.
I love my brothers and sisters.
I am responsible enough to take care of my loved ones.
I can be a good example to my brothers and sisters.
